With election day (Monday, October 21) around the corner, it’s looking more and more likely that we will end up with a minority government.
Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that I’m a big fan of CBC’s Poll Tracker. With the election so close, I’m now in the habit of checking Poll Tracker daily.
The latest update predicts the Liberals will win 135 seats. The NDP have gained a lot of support lately and are now predicted to win 34 seats, while the Greens are at 4 seats. If you add these three totals together, you get 173 seats — enough to appoint a Speaker of the House and still have a majority in the 338-seat House of Commons.
This would be my dream outcome — a Liberal minority supported by Jagmeet Singh’s NDP and Elizabeth May’s Greens.
Why? Because the most critical thing our next federal government must do is tackle the climate crisis, and this combination would be the most effective. Elizabeth May has the strongest commitment — to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions 60% below 2005 levels by 2030. The NDP plan is to cut emissions to 450 megatonnes by 2030, or 38% below 2005’s emissions, which were 731 megatonnes. The Liberal target is net-zero emissions by 2050.
Whatever your choice is, make sure to get out and vote if you have not already done so at the advance polls.
