On Friday, March 22nd, I will be hosting a free public viewing of The Edge of Democracy. The waiting room will open at 6:30PM PST and the film will start at 7PM PST. There will be a panel discussion and a Q&A immediately following the movie.
Exploring the complexities of Brazil’s political landscape, The Edge of Democracy shows how and why the last decade of electoral politics played out the way it did. President Lula da Silva’s first term and his subsequent arrest paved the way for militant conservative Jair Bolsonaro’s rise to power. These events are further explored through the perspective of the director’s family’s complex political past.
The events in Brazil during the 2010s serve as an important lesson about the current state of democracy. Polarization, political violence, naturalization of hate speech, and the rise of fascism all contributed to the shift in Brazilian politics. Yet, these factors are increasingly present on an international level.
Join me on Friday, March 22nd and we’ll further investigate how these factors are affecting the political landscape in Brazil, internationally, and locally.
6:30 – Waiting room opens
7:00 – Brief introduction by Tim Louis, followed by the showing
8:45 – Discussion and guided conversation
These events will be recorded.
FireSide Film nights are a free online series of documentaries and talks offered by Tim Louis. Tim has been involved in Vancouver’s civic politics for over 40 years and has continuously pushed for social change. His entire life is dedicated to social justice and change for all people. Some of his accomplishments include co-founding the BC Coalition of the Disabled, lobbying for the establishment of Translink’s HandyDART services, and co-founding the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.
On the fourth Friday of every month, we gather online for a community experience of fun and a thought-provoking exploration of the important issues that face our world, society, and human family. These nights are intended to create a community of practice, which is a group of people who engage in a process of collective learning. By engaging in this community of practice, we can all learn how to collectively work towards a better world and understand the issues currently facing us.
