I watched President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night and, like me, if you did, too, you probably were turned off big time.
It was a typical Trump event — a speech filled full of false facts with a lot of reality TV gimmicks thrown in for good measure. It was anything but what a State of the Union address should be.
What I found particularly upsetting is how much lack of decorum the Republican members of Congress showed. A State of the Union address should be somewhat dignified. It is definitely not supposed to be a campaign rally. However, much of Trump’s speech was interrupted by ultra-nationalist chants of “USA, USA,” and campaign rally cries of “four more years, four more years.”
In Wednesday morning’s Washington Post, reporters fact-checked his speech and found more than 30 factual errors, which simply added to his unbelievable track record of having made more than 16,000 false, deceptive or misleading statements since he took office. It’s called revisionist history.
Somehow or other — I have no idea how — Trump seems to be able to effortlessly get away with stating things as facts that are simply not true, and he’s never harmed by doing so.
Watching his speech Tuesday night made me wonder what it must have been like to be a progressive in Mussolini’s or Hitler’s time. It must have been very frightening to be in a crowd expressing mindless adulation of a corrupt and evil human being.
If Trump is re-elected for four more years, I believe we are finished as a species, given his position on global warming and the environment in general.
