In July of this year, I began hosting monthly Fireside Film Nights, a free monthly online series featuring progressive films and panel discussions. My goal was to attract 100 viewers by July 2022.
By two months later in September, the viewing audience had increased slightly faster than I had hoped to approximately 50, but still had a long way to go to reach the goal of 100.
The October Fireside Film Night, scheduled for Friday October 22nd and featuring the film The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical, exceeded my wildest expectations. My partner Penny and I worked so hard that the registrations kept rolling in – 50, 60, 70, 100, 120 – and by the evening of the event, we were at 130 expected viewers. We had reached my one-year goal of 100 nine months early! In fact, we had exceeded that goal by 30 registrants.
Then, with great disappointment in my heart, I was forced to cancel the event just 90 minutes prior to liftoff, due to technical problems.
I have now switched video conferencing platforms to Zoom, and we are set to go this month with not just one Fireside Film Night but two!
On Friday November 26th at 7:00pm, I will screen The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical, the movie I had been so excited about playing in October. In my October 20, 2021 blog, I wrote in detail about Harry and this film. I really hope you can join me to see this wonderful documentary. Register here for this virtual screening.
Three days later, on Monday Nov 29th at 7:00, in honour of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People I will be showing the movie Gaza Fights for Freedom, directed, written, and narrated by Abby Martin. This documentary is one of the most moving films I have ever watched. If it does not move you, you are unmovable. For some background you can read my June 25, 2021 blog, On ethnic cleansing and East Jerusalem.
If you have any appetite at all to become more knowledgeable about the plight of those living in Gaza, I urge you to join me on Monday November 29th to view this documentary. Register here for Gaza Fights for Freedom.
Please help me spread the word about the opportunity to view these two incredible films. Feel free to forward the registration links to friends and colleagues.
